Text Box: CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

BACKGROUND and OPERATIONS

The Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center, located in central Oklahoma 5 miles east of downtown Oklahoma City, is responsible for many different kinds of equipment and weapons, ranging from entire systems like the B-2 bomber to a hydraulic pump or a high speed integrated circuit board.  Tinker Air Force Base ensures that the U.S. Air Forceís weapon systems are in constant state of readiness.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

There are career opportunities in a variety of broad and challenging technological areas for engineers and scientists with a bachelorís or advanced degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.  As experience is gained and responsibilities increase, employees may advance to higher-level technical and management positions.

ENTRY LEVEL POSITIONS

Aerospace and Mechanical Engineers:  There are opportunities for new graduates to work on airframe structures, hydraulic systems, environmental control, flight control, propulsion systems, and other projects, which involve nearly the full range of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering specialties.  Assignments include the investigation of material and design problems as well as testing and redesign of inadequate structures or components.

Electronics Engineers, Computer Engineers, and Computer Scientists: The Electronic and Computer Engineers work in a wide range of areas which include components and subsystem engineering for inertial navigation and automatic flight control systems.  Engineers interested in computer engineering can work on military application of digital hardware and software that provide real time integration of modern weapons systems.  Employees have the chance to work on systems such as the B-2, B-1B and B-52 bombers, the Air and Ground Launched Cruise Missile, and the E-3 9 (AWACS).  Electronics Engineers, Computer Engineers, and Computer Scientists of the Software Division also work with electronic systems that test such things as jet engine performance, automatic flight controls, all weather landing systems, and afterburner fuel controls.

Industrial Engineers: Our Industrial Engineers study plant facility layout and provide management expertise on methods, work management, and productivity improvement.  The diversity and complexity of work in this field is its main attraction.  A tremendous portion of the work at the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center involves material handling.  Industrial Engineers coordinate the distribution of over 3,000 individual items per day.

Chemical and Materials Engineers, Chemists, and Metallurgists:  Military aircraft fly faster, higher, longer, and with a heavier load than commercial jets and thus create unusual problems for engineers and scientists to solve.  Engineers and scientists at the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center perform extensive research on materials and coatings to determine the behavior of properties during both real and simulated aerodynamic conditions.  Fatigue and failure analysis of aircraft structure and parts are also researched using both optical and electron microscopes, X-rays, material stress analysis, and ultrasound test equipment.
